Ludo Mich (b. 1945, Antwerp) is an artist whose work is rooted in Fluxus, and it involves many media: computer art, sound performances, Fluxus happenings, poetry, painting, electronic music, drawing, sculpting, theatre, environment and street performances. In 1978 he started working on holography, holographic film and "holoism", introducing holography as a new medium in art. He is known most for his films from the 60s and 70s and is regarded as one of the best artists of the Belgian Underground Cinema.
For the project, Ludo Mich sends us 2 photographs taken during his time in the Coronavirus quarantine. As he says: "The first picture is with the bells. It was taken when I tried to entertain myself with the bells. The second picture is about searching ideas in the corona times. The light is a symbol for when an idea comes to mind."
Mich as well sends his action Vlaggentaal - a 'flag semaphore performance' in an empty theatre. Flag semaphore is a 19th-century communication system used in seafaring because normal communication between ships was impossible at the time. It was performed before an empty theatre. This makes it relevant today too are we are not allowed to go to the cinema or theatre performances.
Artists Respond project was started by the Institute for the Research of the Avant-Garde and the Marinko Sudac Collection. Addressing the current global pandemic, the project aims to virtually present the thoughts and attitudes of neo-avant-garde artists, their energy and the message they have for the present moment. This is the moment in which the world as we know it is on hold and the moment in which we need optimism and solidarity more than ever. We wish for the public to welcome the creative energy of these artists - artists who are ready to point out the state of things, to respond with art and creativity, as they have done in all difficult times in the past.
Ludo Mich was a participant of our Artist on Vacation project in 2017, organised by the Institute for the Research of the Avant-Garde and the Marinko Sudac Collection, with Valamar Riviera d.d. in whose facilities they reside in Poreč.
