IVO GATTIN
18. May 1926
country
Ex Yugoslavia
period
1946-1968

Ivo Gattin (Split, 1926 - Zagreb, 1978) graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in 1953. Between 1963 - 1967, he worked in Milan where he made encyclopedia illustrations, pastels, gouaches and prints. In his first show in Zagreb in 1956 Gattin presented surrealist paintings, and since then began his research in the aesthetics of informel. Experimenting with new techniques (burning, frotage, decollage) and materials (wax, sand, resin, wire) caused him to abandon classical image formats. He was the first informel painter in Croatia. In creating drawings and prints Gattin also used burning and ripping procedures. Gattin discontinued his work between 1967 and 1976. His paintings are Croatia's informel masterpieces.
