"ARTISTS RESPOND" PROJECT: DAVID NEZ (USA)
19. April 2020

David Nez (b. 1949, Massachusetts) joined the Slovenian OHO group in 1968, participating in exhibitions, happenings, photo projects and films. At first, he created objects, followed by environments and installations. Notable among OHO's "Summer Projects" are his installations of mirrors positioned in the landscape. Later, he created a number of processual works, followed by conceptual projects dealing with the relationship between time and space.  Nez’s work today still follows the original creative impulse he discovered during his OHO, a continual exploration and growth.

David Nez currently lives in Portland in the US, the country most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. He sends us a video work titled “Quarantine Exercises: Running & Art”. Showing us his routine for keeping his body and mind in check during this period, he also features his new installation which shows the relationships in the ecosystem, especially those of bees and men.

Artists Respond project was started by the Institute for the Research of the Avant-Garde and the Marinko Sudac Collection. Addressing the current global pandemic, the project aims to virtually present the thoughts and attitudes of neo-avant-garde artists, their energy and the message they have for the present moment. This is the moment in which the world as we know it is on hold and the moment in which we need optimism and solidarity more than ever. We wish for the public to welcome the creative energy of these artists - artists who are ready to point out the state of things, to respond with art and creativity, as they have done in all difficult times in the past.

David Nez was a participant of our Artist on Vacation project in 2014, organised by the Institute for the Research of the Avant-Garde and the Marinko Sudac Collection, with Valamar Riviera d.d. in whose facilities they reside in Poreč.
